Belo Horizonte – CEFET-MG – Campus I
28th, 29th and 30th of September, 2016
The 2nd National Seminar Affirming Diversities: Race and Ethnic Relations, Gender, Youth and Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Brazilian Society is a unique forum for debating and deepening the issue of diversity and difference in our country, without losing sight of the significant experiences of other nations like the United States, Mexico and Portugal. Segregation and exclusion of people with disabilities, as well as racial inequalities and gender inequities are key challenges to be addressed as they are part of the social fabric of Brazil´s society.
In this 2th edition of Affirming Diversities, we reaffirm our commitment to give voice to high school students and the youth in their different expressions. In addition, we are introducing the Poster Section to also receive the papers and perspective of this segment. It is an opportunity for graduate students as well as for high school juniors to present their work and engage with the debates about race-ethnicity relations, inclusion, youthand diversities.
We assume that diversity is more than just the adding up of differences. It is a social and cultural construction that is always permeated by power relations. In this sense, to affirm diversity is a historical commitment as modern societies of the 21st Century that are increasingly becoming more complex and multicultural.
Educational institutions are called to engage with the development of programs and institutional policies that promote racial and gender equity, as well as social and educational inclusion within the framework of human rights and against all forms of racism and prejudice.
This event will bring together teachers, university professors, researchers, students, civil society and social movements representatives that come from many parts of Brazil to build a dialogue with a forceful perspective and oriented by research, teaching and Community Service Learning. The activities will be oriented by the intersections of class, race, ethnicity, culture, gender and sexual diversity.
Participants will be able to meet international keynote speakers, attend lectures, workshops, working groups, cultural performances, interactive panels, photo/image displays and cultural activities at CEFET and in different places of the City of Belo Horizonte.
